From an ethical point of view a longer life for laying hens is desired. Then, hens can be used for a longer period and less male chicks would have to be killed at the age of one day. In large flocks of laying hens moulting has to be induced to prevent social instability in the flock. Project aims: A method was investigated in order to moult laying hens without too much stress for the hens. Results, conclusion, state of the art: The chosen method with daily access to a winter garden had no detectable negative effect on the behaviour of the hens. The moulting succeeded in improving egg quality and plumage condition. |

1. The relationship between perching behaviour, availability of perches and the incidence and severity of breast blisters in broilers was investigated together with a comparison between two slow-growing broiler strains. 2. Sixteen single strain groups (n=60) of Labresse and i657 broilers were subjected throughout the experiment to one of three perch availabilities: 15 cm per bird (Labresse and i657), 7.5 cm per bird (i657 only), and 0 cm per bird (i657 only) with four replicates per treatment. The birds were housed indoors from day-old, and at 43 days of age 52 birds from each group were moved to outdoor housing facilities with access to grass-covered outdoor areas until slaughter at 84 days of age. 3. The use of perches was monitored via video... |

Regarding access to breeding material for laying hens to organic egg production the following can be concluded: The breeding material available is genetically adapted to the cage systems. This cage adapted material has a shortcoming regarding behaviour in larger flocks that manifest in: too high tendency to feather pecking and cannibalism, and, independent of flock size, also to many mislaid eggs. Experiments has shown that feather pecking, cannibalism and nesting behaviour can be improved by selection. A search for alternative breeds/hybrids has not yet given the ideal "Organic hen". There seem to be a possibility for adaptation of laying bird to diets with lower crude protein that makes a production possible based on "home grown" crops even in Northern... |

This study provides a comprehensive view of the organization, management, and financial performance of U.S. broiler farms. Using data from USDA's Agricultural Resource Management Study (ARMS, formerly known as the Farm Costs and Returns Survey), we examine farm size, financial structure, household income, management practices, and spousal participation in decision-making. We compare broiler operations with other farming enterprises and their earnings with that of the average U.S. household. Because most of the 7 billion broilers produced in the United States in 1995 were raised under contract, we also explore the use of contracts and the effects of contracting on the broiler sector. |

Morphological asymmetry has been described as a potential broiler welfare indicator, for interpreting the birds' ability to cope with the challenges that may affect its growth. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of morphological asymmetry data to estimate broiler walking ability and welfare.dBroilers werefed diets supplemented or not with vitamin D. Toes were measured when birds were 42 and 49 days old using digital caliper.the left and right sides of the following four bilateral traits (tarsometatarsus length, outer toe length, mid toe length, and back toe length) were measured twice on intact alive birds by two different researcherh. Data from right and left sides were compared in the two treatments using the Student t-test, and... |

Definition of the problem: Imitated natural light conditions during the artificial incubation may influence pullets' behaviour in being adapted to the diurnal rhythm. Methodology: To study these effects, eggs were set in a commercial incubator either in the dark control or under full spectrum light tubes (Philips TL95, 36 watt). To imitate the light changes by a clucking hen, the eggs were exposed to light for twelve hours a day with a light-intensity of 20 lux. After six hours there was a step-up in light intensity to 1000 lux for 20 minutes. After the incubation period, at day 18 of incubation, all eggs were transferred to the hatching compartments. After hatching, the chickens were reared in paired groups under Swiss organic standards. Each group,... |

Every year about 2.3 million laying hen chicks are produced in Switzerland. This means also 2.3 million male chicks from laying hen lines have to be killed, as they are neither appropriate for fattening nor for breeding. From an ethical point of view this is a baseless discreation of life. The implementation of the first organic brooder gave reason to analyse the situation in Switzerland. Methodology: A survey with the Swiss brooders, a literature research and an interrogation of experts were carried out. Results, conclusion, state of the art: Most of the chicks are killed by CO2. The opinions vary on the ideal composition and concentration of gas mixtures. Newborns are especially resistance to anoxia and incomplete stunning can be... |

This study evaluated the effect of dietary calcium levels and limestone particle size distribution on first-cycle layer performance and egg quality. A completely randomized experimental design in 4x3 factorial arrangement (four Ca levels - 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5%; and three limestone particle size distributions - 100% fine, 50% fine and 50% coarse, 30% fine and 70% coarse) was applied, totaling 12 treatments with six replicates of eight birds each. The treatments did not influence the most of evaluated performance and internal and external egg quality parameters. However, limestone particle size distribution quadratically affected with percentage of defective eggs, with the lowest percentage obtained with the distribution 61.75% fine limestone and 38.25%... |
